Magic In the Shadow of the Apple Tree

AWE 2023 featured incredible technology that is unequivocally the most advanced version of all the forms of what we begrudgingly call XR. And it turns out that XR is the interface for AI, so I guess we extended our relevance again ;)
Seriously though, the list of incredible tech was immense. The place was busting open at the seams with talented folks and magical technologies. Highlights for me were Snapdragon Spaces, HaptX, Leap Motion 2 and Looking Glass AI. My soul was so bouyed interacting and learning with all these brilliant people in this odd new perceptual, experiential medium. The toys have never been this powerful!
And yet, all we could really talk about was the looming Apple Headset™ whatever it was; announcing (allegedly) that next Monday. So we politely basked in the magic on display while wondering what would come and if it would be a royal pain the ass or a savior, or a flop to send us back to winter even when we are just now entering our Summer given the power of the tech I experienced and the design prowess starting to solidify.
Spoiler, the prodigal Apple was announced and it had me Leaping for joy, but let’s save that story for a bit later down. First, some highlights from AWE.
XR is the Interface for AI
- XR industry judo move

Snapdragon Spaces

Glasses concept shows a delightful paradigm.
Moreover, as a unifying standard it is bringing some nice uniformity to the Android phone world where tracking is superb. Playing [game] I was a delightful time using running around with three other people as the mechanic, and no real tech hiccups just laughter.

Leap Motion 2

This was a welcome surprise for me, since I basically started my XR journey with the Leap Motion 1 and Kinect.

Lynx headset is using Leap Motion 2

Having an open source headset with such high fidelity hand tracking is really powerful.

Looking Glass - AI Agent Demo

This was astonishing more for the fact that it ‘just worked’ on his first try demoing to us. That is the real singularity IMO...

WWDC23 Thoughts: Apple Makes the Magic Leap

Then the next Monday, in office watch party - my hot takes
Unity continues as the Borg it is.
Delightfully familiar paradigm: LuminOS reborn
“I can finally leave 2016” - me when the combo eye tracking hand pinch gesture is standard at OS level
Hands at rest: taking XR from tiring gimmick to professional tool

Space suit to snorkeling

This is ‘The Way’ but we can’t stay here.

“They finally made it a computer, the rest of them were just game consoles, but they needed to be more useful.” paraphrasing a colleague.
A medium for thinking the unthinkable by getting the computer aligned with your intention.
Perhaps more so than privacy we must focus on sovereignty and transparency. Apple billed itself as a lock and key, and yet those of us who’ve read The Circle or even just thought about the locksmith of a mind can realize quickly that any centrality will become corrupt. The processing of human perception must never leave the device and one’s headset/personal computer must explain what it knows about you with no deceptions. You might not like hearing it, but it must never lie to you.

There’s a different type of computer waiting for you all who take the magic leap and then ward off devastation. An angelic computer paradigm, where your interest instantly sparks knowledge acquisition. Where your pulls toward negative experiences, or harmful stimuli are countered with perfectly crafted enlightening alternatives. A computer paradigm that is you knowing yourself, not a company trying to sell you anything, but you and us all exploring what being a being of humans being the Earth could really mean. 100 years from now we can remember when technology existed and laugh in technique, as the world harmonizes desire with wisdom and this dark era of domination is but the soil of a world where no harm need come for abundance and no misery may linger anymore.
